Abercrombie has really come out swinging in the past few years, particularly in their denim department. A brand that I *thought* was just a strong smelling memory of my childhood made the ultimate Justin Bieber move and reinvented themselves, now gaining just as much, if not more, love and admiration for their clothes (and not just from teenagers).
Even though Abercrombie sells the full range of fashion, from sweaters and dresses to swim and shoes (and yes, even still The Cologne) it’s their jean styles that I think have really made the most home runs.
After trying what felt like their entire line of jeans, it was the ’90s Ultra High-Rise Straight Jean that stole my heart. And I mean it, I’m in love.
“Ultra High-Rise” Isn’t As Extreme As It Sounds
I’m considered tall-ish, coming in at 5’9” in height, but maybe more importantly in the conversation of jeans is that I have a very straight frame. I am pretty much curve-less, with virtually no waist line and only a smidge of a booty. Due to all of these things, I adore high rise. I love how a larger rise makes room for larger pockets, thus giving the appearance of a nice backside. I find that a pair of jeans that comes up to my belly button, or even higher, is just much more comfortable for me than something lower.
That said, I have friends who come in at 5’2” who also totally adore these jeans. One of the most amazing parts about Abercrombie denim is that they not only create a wide range of inseams to choose from, but they also have a Curve Love ’90s Ultra High-Rise Jean, specifically created with 2” of extra room in the hips! And I have only heard fantastic things about them.
If you continue on further, I will break down the actual inseam measurements and how they compare to other popular styles on the market. Spoiler: we should not judge a pair of jeans by its name.
The Details: Abercrombie ’90s Ultra High-Rise Straight Jeans Come In Endless Options
The ’90s Ultra High Rise Straight Jeans come in more than 10 washes, and 8 washes are currently available in Curve Love, with seasonal colors even getting released for this spring. Sizes range from 23-37. Depending on the wash you might have distressed elements, ripped knees, split hems, or simply a refined, clean look.
Abercrombie takes it a step further and even gives you two different waistbands to choose from: regular or criss-cross. The criss-cross waistband is not only fun and on-trend, but it provides a slight v shape in the front band, which is known to be ultra-flattering in both highlighting and giving the appearance of curves.
A&F ’90s Ultra High-Rise Straight Jean Composition
The ’90s Ultra High-Rise Straight Jeans are made of 99% Cotton, 1% Elastane. These jeans are considered rigid by Abercrombie’s standards, but still have that 1% stretch to aid in a subtle softness. Mine do not bag out after repeated wear but will actually mold to my shape depending on how long I go between washes, much like 100% cotton denim.
A&F ’90s Ultra High-Rise Straight Jean Sizing
I consider these true to size, and while that can be difficult to know nowadays with the inconsistency in sizing across fashion brands as a whole, the size I wear in most brands is the size I love best in these. They are a full-length jean and available in multiple inseam options (which is one of the best parts of Abercrombie’s denim line as a whole). Depending on the wash you choose and available stock, these are the inseam options to choose from:
Extra Short Inseam: 26.5″
Short Inseam: 28.5″
Regular Inseam: 30.5″
Long Inseam: 32.5″
I own both the regular and long inseams, and although extremely similar to the eye in real life, I love them both for different reasons. At 5’9”, the regular length hits me just as it does on the models, with the long inseam just hovering at the floor.
A&F ’90s Ultra High-Rise Straight Jean Rise
“Ultra high rise” is the title Abercrombie & Fitch gives to their jeans with the highest rise option that they sell. The regular waistbands have a rise of 11 ½”, with the criss-cross waistband measuring 10” at the middle (where it slightly dips into the v shape). For reference, AGOLDE’s ’90s Mid Rise Loose Fit is listed on their website as having a rise of 12 ¾”, a jean that’s often compared to this Abercrombie ’90s Ultra High-Rise Straight Jean, and Levi’s Ribcage Jean falls anywhere between 11-12” in rise.
The Abercrombie 90’s Ultra High-Rise Jeans I Own & Love
I told you I loved these, and it shows with the collection I’ve started. With Abercrombie running frequent sales on their jeans, you can often scoop up a pair at a fraction of the regular price. If you gave me a choice right now, I would prefer a new wash in the ’90s Ultra High-Rise Jean over pretty much every other pair on the market!

Light Ripped Wash | Hoodie | Bag | Sneakers
I love this wash specifically for the rip slightly higher than my knee. I think it’s such a fun and unique spot to add some distressing. It’s also a helpful placement for keeping the rip as-is, as opposed to it being on my knees where I inevitably always rip them more and make them bigger!

This was one of the first pairs I purchased, and they’ve been well-worn and washed. Even thrown in the dryer (eeek — it was semi-on-accident). The denim was extremely stiff afterwards, but after two full-day wearings, the jeans broke back in quite wonderfully.

Abercrombie’s ’90s Ultra High-Rise Jean with this regular waistband is, in my opinion, an amazing dupe for Re/Done’s ’90s High-Rise Loose. I think that’s a big reason I fell so hard for this Abercrombie style, as Re/Done’s High-Rise Loose has been my top favorite pair of jeans of the past few years. You can’t beat having the same iconic fit but at a fraction of the cost.

The criss-cross waistband of the ’90s Ultra High Rise Straight Jean is actually the reason I found this pair of denim to begin with. I had been eyeing up AGOLDE’s popular criss-cross pair, but just couldn’t commit to it. When I found these (on sale!) I jumped at the chance to see what these would look like on me. I loved them so much, I had to know what the regular waistband was like!

I’m wearing the exact same size in both styles of ’90s Ultra High-Rise Jeans pictured below, but notice how the criss-cross band really creates more of an appearance of curves (here’s the criss-cross waist in a lighter wash). The booty is fitted, with the pockets look as if I really did stretch the front of my jeans to close at an asymmetrical angle. This makes my booty appear rounder than the regular waistband (score)! The regular waistband hits right at my belly button, with the criss-cross falling just below.
